A precursor to modern day whiskey, Poitín is a traditional Irish spirit dating back to the 15th century. Originally referred to in Gaelic as uisce beatha (pronounced ishka baha) which became known in English as whiskey.

Due to a a series of taxes imposed on distilled spirits, production and distillation of Poitín moved to remote areas throughout the country, usually taking place at night, and the phrase ‘Moonshiners’ was coined. Illicit (and untaxed) Poitín distillation continued right up until 1997 when it was decriminalised by the Irish government.
